St. Paul hospital

St. Paul hospital (Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau) in Barcelona is dynamically developing and competing in all spheres of medicine, leading in rendering medical services in Catalonia.

The hospital was founded 600 years ago as a result of uniting six medieval clinics of Barcelona and is considered the oldest medical institution in Spain. In medieval time catholic monks and parishioners-volunteers used to take care of the sick and invalid people.

In 1901 the construction of the main building according to the project of a catalan architect-modernist Lluís Domènech i Montaner began on its territory. Nowadays it is included into the list of UNESCO World Heritage.

In 2000, taking into account the new requirements of modern medicine, a group of catalan architects started the construction of a new building of more than 90 000m2 in the northern part of the hospital complex. The hospital is counted on 136 places of a day hospital, 664 beds and 21 operating rooms. Yearly more than 35 000 patients undergo day hospital treatment in Sant Pau, 350 000 ones have out-patient reception and more than 145 000 patients receive medical assistance in urgent situations.

In the Sant Pau hospital you will be treated with care and affability by the medical staff as well as be professionally served by specialized doctors.

In order to avoid queues and not to wait too long for getting your outpatient treatment or hospitalization all the patients have doctor’s appointments scheduled at a certain time.

In the twenty-four-hour inpatient department patients receive immediate and qualified medical care.

Between Sant Pau and Healthcare Network University an agreement has been signed, the aim of which is collaboration between two organizations in the sphere of haematology and in strictly specialized spheres of cancer treatment.

The hospital is a leader in Spain in the number of medical investigations works, financed by the government and published by its leading specialists, as well as of scientific-research projects and grants received.

The work of the hospital is regulated by the Government of Catalonia, by the City Council and by the archbishop of Barcelona, as all of them are the members of a Guardians Council of Health Protection Administration.

Sant Pau Hospital is located in the district of «Guinardo» at Carrer Sant Quinti, 87-89. There are two subway lines nearby: Guinardó Hptal de St Pau (yellow line L4) and Sant Pau Dos de Maig (blue line L5).
